Some modifications need to be made to accommodate the deaf dog's lifestyle.

Hand Gestures are a great communication tool for deaf dogs. Using these gestures should be consistent.

Stomping or waving when there is oncoming danger to get dog’s attention.

Establish eye contact; teach the dog to make frequent eye contact.

One of the first focuses of training. It is vital for dog to look at commander to follow what other commands are.

Some deaf dogs can hear certain frequencies such as shrill dog whistle.

Use this whistle and reward them based on their response.

Use visual cues

Using visual click by rapidly opening and closing hand once, then giving your dog a thumbs up or other gesture.

Help dogs to cope with hearing loss

Walk up to them with heavier steps, so vibration of footfalls can be detected and prevent them from startle.

Using collar with buzzing or vibrating capability to send a signal to your dog.

Keep dog on leash or safe area to prevent any accident to harm the dog or getting lost.

In public area, use medical alert collar and leash with word DEAF printed on it.

Teach family member how to approach a deaf dog and interact with them appropriately.
